What is STARFLEET International?
STARFLEET International (SFI) is a real-world Star Trek fan association. Throughout this manual, SFI means STARFLEET International, not the fictional Starfleet seen on screen. It brings people together to enjoy Star Trek, make friends, learn, create and contribute to their communities. Our ship names, ranks and departments give us a shared Star Trek setting. The people and activities behind them are real. You can explore the wider organisation at www.sfi.org.
From ship to Fleet
The USS Typhon is a chapter, a group of fans who share a ship identity and take part in activities together. Chapters belong to geographical regions, which help nearby crews connect and work together. The regions, chapters and individual members are all part of the wider STARFLEET organisation. The Typhon can be your home while you take part in the wider Fleet.
Our place in Region 11 (The 11th Fleet)
The Typhon belongs to Region 11 (R11), also known as the 11th Fleet. STARFLEET groups its chapters into 20 geographic regions around the world. R11 brings together chapters and members across Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Oceania. You can see how the regions fit together on HQ's Regions of STARFLEET page. Our chapters have their own ship identities and local activities, while sharing a wider Fleet community. SFI members who want to support Region 11 can explore regional roles at vr.sfianz.org. For regional news and Regional Coordinator business, visit www.sfianz.org.
The Typhon currently serves as R11's flagship. Our Commanding Officer, Admiral Greg Mortensen, also serves as Regional Coordinator (RC), supported by Vice Regional Coordinator (VRC) Fleet Captain David Yee of the USS Parallax. Based in Brisbane, Queensland, the Parallax serves as R11's deputy flagship. Together, the RC and VRC help connect our region with the wider organisation. For everyday Typhon matters, your Department Chief remains a good first contact.
Our neighbours and sister chapters
Based in Sydney, the Typhon connects crew from Wollongong along the coast to Newcastle, inland to Lithgow and Bathurst, and farther north and west across New South Wales. We also have members interstate and overseas. In southern New South Wales, we share an area with the USS Animus, based in the ACT. The Animus began as a Typhon shuttlecraft, and we supported its crew as their shakedown mothership while they grew into a chapter of their own. Today we are fellow chapters with a part of our history in common.
Our sister chapters are fellow crews, not competing territories. When you meet someone from interstate who is interested in STARFLEET, tell them about the chapter closest to home and encourage them to make contact. They may still choose the Typhon because this is where they feel at home. That choice belongs to the member, and we welcome them here.
Across the region, you will also find these chapters. The places below are their listed locations, not boundaries on where their members can live:
- USS AdelaideParalowie, South Australia
- USS AnimusPalmerston, ACT
- USS Marie CurieWellington, New Zealand
- USS PacificaMackay, Queensland
- USS ParallaxBrisbane, Queensland
- USS ShadowAuckland, New Zealand
- USS Southern CrossMelbourne, Victoria
Chapter details may change over time. For current listings, visit the STARFLEET Region 11 chapter finder.
Two related memberships
Being a Typhon crewmember and holding an individual SFI membership are related, but they are not the same thing. You can belong to the Typhon and take part in chapter activities without joining SFI. We encourage crew to consider joining SFI as well: it connects you with people, learning and opportunities across the wider Region and Fleet, while the Typhon remains your home chapter.
If you hope to progress to higher ranks or take on a leadership role aboard the Typhon, we encourage you to join SFI and explore its training opportunities. SFI members can take Officer Training School (OTS) and Officer Command College (OCC) at their own pace. Before someone can be appointed as a Department Chief, Deputy Chief or Shuttle Commander, they must be an SFI member and complete the training required for the role, including the STARFLEET Data Protection Policy (SFDPP) course. These roles can involve access to other members' personal information, so the required training must be complete before appointment and before that access is granted. You can still take part in chapter activities while working towards those requirements.
Your Typhon roster records your place in this crew. SFI membership is a separate registration with the international organisation. For current costs, joining options and sign-up information, read Membership & Support. If you are unsure which option suits you, ask Command Staff.
Already an SFI member? Sign in to the Fleet membership database at db.sfi.org. To renew, visit renew.sfi.org and enter your five-digit SCC membership number. If you are signed in to the Typhon roster, use its renewal link when available. It can pass your SCC number through for you. If you cannot find your number, ask Command Staff rather than submitting a new membership application.
What the wider Fleet offers
Joining SFI can introduce you to Star Trek fans beyond your home chapter through regional gatherings, shared projects and online connections. Members can explore STARFLEET educational opportunities, read the STARFLEET Communiqué and look into voluntary interests and roles across the organisation. Check current availability and participation requirements for anything you would like to try.
You do not need to seek a title or attend everything to enjoy being part of the Fleet. Start with an interest, a course or a conversation. The more you choose to explore and contribute, the more connections and opportunities you may find. See STARFLEET Programs for starting points beyond the ship.
Where to go next: Membership & Support explains your membership choices and where to find joining information. STARFLEET Programs introduces learning and other wider-Fleet interests. For chapter and regional contacts, read Command Structure.
